traveling w/ my 92 yr old grandmother-independent- but needs step stool to get into a high suv, like the Minnie van. We know there are accessible Minnie vans- but also know they are limited, can we bring a collapsible stepstool and locker check?

Hi, Megan! And welcome back to planDisney! I am so excited to hear that you have a multi-generational trip to Walt Disney World coming up. I truly believe there's no better place to vacation with extended family, because there is genuinely something for everyone at the Disney Parks. It looks like your vacation is coming up next month, so let's get to your question!

I understand that your grandmother needs assistance when getting into a raised vehicle. It appears that collapsible stools are a bit of a gray area when it comes to Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules. The list of prohibited items includes folding chairs. Since stools are not explicitly mentioned, the security Cast Member may allow it. Unfortunately, the nature of the item is so similar to a folding chair that, likely, they will not permit it. It will be up to the discretion of the Security Cast Member. Please understand that they are only doing their job to the best of their abilities.

I did speak with Liz, a Cast Member with Minnie Van Connected by Lyft. She said that while the Minnie Vans do not carry step stools, the standard Minnie Van is a Chevrolet Suburban. It does have a built-in step bar to use to get into the vehicle, but it is a bit high. Her recommendation was to request an Accessible Minnie Van, because the step is more appropriate for someone needing assistance. These are Ford Transits and have a lower, more suitable running board. Liz assured me that if you request an accessible vehicle, that is what you will get. I do suspect that waits for these vehicles could be longer during peak times.

I also talked with my friend and fellow panelist, Melanie. She has taken her elderly parents on many visits to Walt Disney World and confirmed that her mother used the step bar on the standard Minnie Vans, along with the handle just inside the door. I am hopeful that this assistance could be sufficient for your grandmother, as well.

If you're looking for a dining recommendation, I would love to suggest The BOATHOUSE: Great Food, Waterfront Dining, Dream Boats at Disney Springs. My mouth is watering just thinking about their Pan-Seared Gulf Grouper and their Grilled Mahi Tacos. The atmosphere is elegant, and the fish is extra-fresh.

Megan, what a wonderful granddaughter you are to look out for the best interest of your grandmother. I can tell that you are a gift to her, and I am sure she is grateful to have you. I hope everything goes smoothly on your trip and that you all have the most magical time! Please come back to planDisney if you have any more questions we can help with!
