We will be traveling 5/10-16/09 with our 4&8 yr old girls. My neighbor just told me that it is a terrible time because the "love bugs" are out and they are all over and her children had a hard time enjoying themselves. Please tell me what y

Hi Laura!  I did investigate this question since I am also coming for a ten day visit during that time and staying at the Fort Wilderness cabins no less!

Yes it is "love bug" season but only on a rare occasion do they bother the guests even at the campgrounds.  This is from seasoned RV travelers who go every year at this time.  They could remember only one day when it appeared a "hatching" might have taken place to make them even notice it.  She said her husband hates bugs and they love him and they would never be returning to Disney every year in May if it was bad.  Your cars will be covered as they seem to love to congregate on the road areas. My daughter also was married at Disney in May and I cannot recall one time being bothered by anything except the warm sun being too hot for my northern blood!

Disney has always been very aware of keeping guests comfortable and safe from uninvited guests and although they cannot guarantee you will not run into these "love bugs" they will do everything possible to make sure your comfort is achieved.
