Hi. I will be traveling with my 13 year old daughter. How safe does it feel for her to be walking around the ship without parents?

    Alison,

I polled the opinions of some of the other moms and dads on the panel and I think the general consensus of us all is that we believe it is a safe environment to give your teenagers some space on a Disney Cruise and trust them to enjoy the ship on their own if they show that they can be mature enough to do so.

Marc's 13 year old son felt like he was "king of the world" and really enjoyed being able to "go it alone".  He was responsible enough to meet or contact his dad at certain times of the day for shows, dinner and such.  Beth's two daughters, 11 and 13 years old were together at all times when they were "going it alone" and she had some pre-determined "meet up" locations at certain times so they could enjoy some vacation time as a family as well as making sure everything was okay with them.  Kim's 10 year old son was also allowed to roam on his own and really enjoyed it and was a very responsible young man!

I think it is up to you to decide what is a safe environment for your daughter, but I personally would let my daughter have some "freedom" as I believe she is very mature for her age. I would definitely have some rules as far as meeting up with her from time to time to make sure she is okay.  I would also make sure that she could find her own way around the ship before leaving her alone.

Disney replaced the pagers that you used to get in the Kids Clubs with the all new "Wave Phone" available in each of the staterooms.  You will need to sign a waiver agreeing to pay a $250.00 replacement cost if it is lost or damaged while on your cruise (they are not waterproof by the way!).  They will be free to use on the ship and Castaway Cay (if you are going there) and you can even text message with them and leave messages.  This is such a nice option for you all to be able to keep in touch as much as you like.

    Best wishes,
    Brigitta
