Hello! I will be traveling with my mother-in-law and two children (son - 12, daughter - 6) on the Disney Magic in a few weeks. My daughter is autistic and I am wondering about the staff's training in dealing with special needs kids. Thanks!

I hope that you'll find the Youth Staff to be impressive. I had the opportunity to interview one of the managers. There is a training initiative to familiarize the Youth Staff with special needs (Autism, Downs Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, etc.) children. The Youth Staff are educated in Early Education and other appropriate degrees.

Parents are invited to sit down with the staff and discuss their child's specific triggers, sensory issues and other concerns. Many programs can be adapted to your child's needs.

Prior to sailing, it is recommended that you call Disney Cruise Line to let them know that your special needs child will be aboard. A parent will be given choices as to the level of participation that they feel suits their child.

My husband is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and would recommend that you work with the Youth Staff to decide which programs are appropriate for your child.

    Have a magical journey!
