I am traveling in a few weeks with a very squirmy 10 mth old. Any ideas for a peaceful plane ride, esp. takeoff and landing? Also, we have a dining plan. Do they have adult food she can eat with no teeth at the quick service restaurants? Thanks!

    Hi Jennifer,

Most of us on the panel have survived quite a few plane rides with babies.  Some trips are better than others!  Here are some tips I collected from first-hand experience and talking to other moms:

    • For take off and landing, ensure your baby has something in her mouth to help equalize ear pressure.  This can be a binky (pacifier), bottle, sippy cup or, lollipop (they sell "safety pops" with rings instead of sticks for small kids.)
    • Ensure that you bring along any "lovey" or comfort item.
    • Bring entertainment...lots of it...more than you think  you will need.  Portable DVD players, favorite books or small toys work wonders when you bring them out one by one and act like each is a huge surprise, or if you can, get a few new things that your baby hasn't seen before.  The novelty alone, should buy you some quiet time.
    • Bring favorite snacks, drinks
    • My kids loved playing "peek-a-boo" with the shades on the plane windows
    • During melt-downs, go for a walk.  The plane bathroom always amused my babies.  I let them turn the water on and off a few times.  They thought the flushing sound on the plane was hilarious.

I used to turn red and wonder what people thought of me if my kids flipped out on the plane, until I stopped, and realized where I was going.  I think you'll find that many of the passengers en route to Orlando are under 5, and at some point during the flight, almost every parent on the plane will have his/her own "crisis" to contend with.

As for food that your baby can eat, a lot depends on what your baby is capable of "chewing".  I was able to find apple sauce, soft pasta, plain bread, bananas and other "staples" almost everywhere.  There are also baby care centers located in each of the parks that sell baby food and provide a quiet refuge if you and your baby need a quiet place to rest, feed, etc.

    Have a great time!
