Hello we are traveling to Disney World for my sons 6th birthday. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 7 months ago. Is there any suggestions you have for us to get him to see and do the most possible while keeping him on his meal/insulin schedule?

Richard, is there a better place on earth than Walt Disney World to celebrate a sixth birthday?

I too have a family member with Type 1 diabetes, so I will be happy to share some tips we have learned while visiting Mickey.

Typically nutritional information is only available on packaged food items; restaurants do not have carb counts for menu choices. Chefs and managers are always helpful and willing to discuss ingredients and make suggestions. We use the Livestrong app to approximate carbs by searching for similar options.

Consider monitoring blood sugar levels a bit more often than when you are at home. Your vacation schedule is going to be a bit different than your normal routine. Changed meal times, extra walking, and over-the-top-theme park snacks all have an impact on glucose levels. Also, your son will be distracted by the fun and excitement of the parks and might not readily notice if his blood sugar starts dropping.

Always, always have juice and high carb snacks in your bag. You do not want your child's blood sugar to start dropping when you are far from a snack car, in the middle of the queue for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, or in a long line for food and find you have nothing to remedy his low glucose.

I believe you will find your son can enjoy the magic, joy, and opportunities of Walt Disney World as much as anyone with a little planning and vigilance- just as he can in all aspects of his life.

Please contact me if you have any additional questions about any aspect of your upcoming Walt Disney World vacation.
