We are traveling to Disney World in the middle of February. We are stying on property and using the meal plan option. Is it necessary to make dinner reservations prior to our arrival if we are not planning on a character meal? This is our 1st visit.

    Hi Bridgit!

Congratulations on your first vacation to Walt Disney World, and kudos for utilizing the Disney Dining Plan!

Is it necessary to make an advanced dining reservation? No, it is not necessary or required. However, it was designed to allow you to avoid the longer wait times for your meals, and maximize your fun times on vacation. For example, imagine going to Cape May Cafe at Disney's Beach Club Resort at 6:30 PM for dinner, then waiting possibly an hour or more to eat. Situations such as this happen frequently, and can be avoided with an advanced dining reservation. Trust me, I fully understand that sometimes it is just fun to go and not have a plan. I have done this several times, and had a blast!

A reservation is recommended for table service restaurants or the dinner shows, as counter service restaurants do not require a reservation.

My suggestion would be to make 1 or 2 dining reservations, think about it and then make your decision. If you decide against it, just be sure to cancel prior to the 24 hour cancellation required by most restaurants. You are also free to make last minute dining reservations by calling (407)WDW-DINE, and the agent will be happy to assist and let you know what is available.

Enjoy and have a magical time!
