I will be traveling to Disney this summer with three kids (16, 14, and 8). I will likely be staying Port Orleans Riverside. Is transportation to and from the parks a reasonable alternative to the extra expense and extra trouble of renting a car.

Car rental is a hot topic on the Moms Panel. Most of the Moms frequently rent cars. I never do. Here's why...

You can get to/from the Orlando airport and your WDW for free, using Disney's Magical Express service. There is good, clean, free transportation from all the resorts to all the theme parks, the water parks, and Downtown Disney. As a bonus, the Disney transportation will take you right to the park entrance gates. In general, the buses, boats and monorails that make up the Disney transportation system are very reliable and you don't have to worry about getting lost or remembering where you parked. Also, if you felt comfortable letting your older kids explore WDW on their own for bit, the Disney transport system would be a great way for them to get around.

So, why would anyone want to rent a car? Well, sometimes you do have to wait for a bus. On rare occasion, when the system is experiencing a problem or when the parks are particularly crowded, you may have to wait quite a while for bus. Again, this is rare, but does happen. Also, with the Disney system, transportation from resort to resort can be complicated. For example, to get from Port Orleans to the Hoop Dee Doo Revue at Fort Wilderness, you would need to take a bus to the Magic Kingdom and then transfer to boat. When we visit other resorts and we don't have a car, we often will take a cab. Taxis are plentiful at WDW. The fare between most of the resorts is usually between $10 and $20. There are cabs that will take up to nine people to a destination for the same fee. Even if you take cabs several times during your stay, this will still be cheaper than renting a car.

If you're willing to be patient and spring for a cab once in a while, my feeling is that you really don't need to rent a car. In more than 20 trips to WDW, we've probably rented a car only twice.
