We are traveling to Disney for the first time with our 2 (boy) and 5 (girl) year olds nov. 26-dec 1 2013. So far I have booked lunch as Akershus one day and dinner at Crystal palace one night. Other meal/show suggestions? We are staying at contemporary.

    Hi Lauren!

I get so excited when I hear from people who are planning their first Walt Disney World vacation. There are so many amazing things to see and experience, so I'm sure you're really excited as well!

When it comes to choosing restaurants at Walt Disney World, you can't go wrong with any of them. That being said, let me share a few that my family really enjoys:

    1) Chef Mickey's. Since Disney's Contemporary Resort will be your home base, that one should definitely be on your list.

    2) Cinderella's Royal Table. Dining with princesses inside of Cinderella's Castle...it doesn't get much better than that!

    3) Tusker House. You'll need a hearty breakfast to give you energy to explore Disney's Animal Kingdom, and this is the place to get one!

    4) Hollywood & Vine. If your children like the characters from Disney Junior, you'll find some of them hanging out here for breakfast and lunch.

    One more...

    5) I'm going to throw you a curveball and recommend the '50s Prime Time Cafe. It's not listed as a "character" dining experience, but the servers are real characters in their own right. It's a hoot!

Here's a little tip from your buddy Derek:

If you need a few minutes at each meal to help your children get settled (i.e. cut their food, help them cool it off, play "Here Comes the Airplane!", etc.), feel free to ask your server to either bring their food first or hold your entree for a few minutes.

I normally feel funny making requests like that at a restaurant, but I've experienced many occasions when the servers at Walt Disney World restaurants offered to do it before I could even ask!

I hope that helps. If you would like a few more suggestions, or just want to get an opinion on other restaurants you're considering, please feel free to write back and I'll be happy to help!

    Best regards,
    Derek
