    We are traveling on the Disney Dream in March and I was wondering if you need everyone's birth certificates on you every time you arrive at an island. Do we need to take them off the ship at Nassau and Castaway Cay? I am worried about losing them.

    Congratulations on your spring sailing aboard the Disney Dream -- you might need to pack a little handkerchief for all the drool you'll experience once you lay eyes on her!

    First of all, let me put in a little plug for taking the plunge and getting everyone's passports. I did this not so long ago for my four children, and although it was a big one-time expense, I have SUCH peace of mind knowing that they can go anywhere in the world on a moment's notice and not have to worry about emergency situations abroad. Plus, it really didn't take that long to have them all mailed back to us.

    For Bahamian cruises, you presently can still use birth certificates with government-issued photo IDs to check in although passports and passport cards are strongly recommended. You'll need your Key to the World card every time you get on and off the ship, and everyone over the age of 18 will need a photo, government-issued ID. Children under the age of 18 desiring to leave the ship will need an accompanying parent or guardian or a signed authorization form if they are leaving the ship unaccompanied.

    For me, I don't visit any foreign port of call without my passport identifying me as a US citizen in case of an emergency -- maybe with the exception of Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. Therefore, if you don't have a passport, I would recommend bringing birth certificates and photo IDs (stashed away in a plastic baggie) if you plan on visiting Nassau on your own.
