We are traveling in Dec. to WDW w/a 2 yr old. We will be flying for the first time with him. We are nervous about how he will do. What experiences have you had flying w/a 2yr old & should we drive? Also how does the flight staff react to kids that a

    Hi Amanda,

I think just about all of us on the Panel feel your pain and anxiety.  Flying with a toddler for the first time can be a scary experience.  You have no idea how they will react: will they sleep, will they cry because of the pressure in their ears, will they stay in their seat, etc.

Honestly, things will probably work out just fine.  Sure, everyone has that "one" horrible flight with a child story, but 99% of the time it's pretty uneventful.  In the long run I think the relatively short flight from Virginia is a lot easier than driving.  Just make sure you are prepared.

I always found that bringing a car seat made life easier.  Yes, it's kind of a hassle to carry the thing through the airport, but your son is used to being in it.  The buckles on the plane can be opened and shut way too easily.  Also, make sure you have plenty of snacks for the trip.  I really recommend bringing a sippy cup and some chewy type food (fruit snacks or raisins).  Give them to him during take off and landing; the chewing and swallowing will help relieve any pressure in his ears.  Then bring diversions: books, favorite blanket, movies on a portable dvd - anything to keep him occupied.  With any luck, he'll conk out on the runway and you won't need anything, but it's always good to be prepared.

I find that most flight attendants are very helpful, especially on trips to Orlando.  Those flights are filled with families, so it is a great first flight experience.

Hope this helps.  Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
