Do you have any training trips for a mom who'd like to run her first Disney half-marathon with her 14 year old son? We are both in good health but are inexperienced runners.

    HI Jill!
Let me first congratulate you on deciding to run your first half marathon and to do it with your son! As you know, my 14 year old son and I did just that at the Walt Disney World Half Marathon only a few weeks ago. We actually ran/walk the entire 13.1 miles together and crossed the finish line holding hands!  It was a wonderful experience for both of us.  I would recommend running a Disney race and having plenty of time to train- at least 4 months.  Jeff Galloway has great programs online to help with your training, and we used this for our training.  An app that is helpful as well is "Couch to 5K" that is available at iTunes.  You will need to sit down with your son and talk about the schedule.  You will need to commit to training at least two days during the week for 30-40 minutes and a long run on the weekends.  The long runs are very important as this will give your the endurance and confidence to run the race.  You will also need to take in account the season and time of day that you will be running.  My preference was early morning on a weekend to get it done when the weather was cooler, however, my teenage son wanted to sleep in and run later.  It was a lot of compromising on both our parts.  My son runs faster than I do, so when we were running, I would ask him about his classes and learned a lot about World History which helped him to study and slow down! During your training, it is great to run in your local races and if you can run a 10K, you can put your time in to be further up in the corrals on race day. Jill, I have so much more to tell you about this subject very near and dear to my heart, but have run out of room. Please send a follow up question when you need to.  I would love to hear how your training is coming.  GOOD LUCK on your training. You can do this and be such a fantastic role model for your son.
