I've been told by friends that using DVC points to pay for a Disney Cruise is not a smart use of points. Since I am new to both DVC and DCL what is your opinion on this. First cruise is in October and am planning the next.

Howdy Barbara!  This is such a great question because it helps to point out that through Disney Vacation Club, Members can use their points when, where and how often they wish!

Thanks to our Membership, which we purchased directly from Disney, we have stayed in all of the DVC Resorts at Walt Disney World, enjoyed a Disney Cruise, spent a magical week in Hawaii and stayed in 4 of the themed Resorts at Walt Disney World that are part of the Disney Collection.

Point for point, it is true that you will most likely use more points per night on the Cruise than if you select one of the Disney Vacation Club Resorts.  But you have to determine how you can best maximize your Membership.

One suggestion I can offer is for you to make a 3-5 year plan.  How do you want to use your points over the next 3-5 years?  Will using your points for a Disney Cruise fit into your plan?  The week that we spent in Hawaii (prior to Aulani opening) was early in our Membership.  We banked points, used current year points and borrowed from the next year to make the reservation but it was one of the most magical non-Disney vacations we have been on.  We celebrated our wedding anniversary in Maui while we sipped on tropical beverages, listened to a slack-key guitar player and enjoyed breathtaking views of the sun setting over the beautiful sandy beach at our resort.  I wouldn't trade those points for anything.

Thank you for your question and WELCOME to DISNEY VACATION CLUB!!!  I'm so excited for you!  I know you will love your Membership and I wish you bon voyage as you set sail on your first Disney Cruise!  Enjoy every magical moment of your Membership and let me know if you need any further information.
