Thx Whitney 4 answering last Q. I have 1 more 4 u. If we go in Aug., we might switch & go the 1st week of school for my dd(9) and ds(5). Going that wk, we will get free dining & save lots of $$! Do u see other families do this?

    Michelle:

Thanks so much for coming back!

I do see more families trying to stretch their vacation dollar, and that typically means choosing to go to Disney during the off-season. (Disney calls it Value Season.) It's simply a matter of supply and demand: at its heart, Disney is kid-focused and when kids go back to school, they aren't going to Disney, leaving the resort with a large supply of rooms that they discount to fill back up and create more demand! More and more families who have ruled out Disney for budget reasons, find Value Season an optimum time to make that dream a reality.

Thankfully, our kids go to a school where the administration does its best to foster family vacations. Best of all, we have had teachers who were equally supportive. I realize this is not how it is everywhere, and you bring up a subject that can raise controversy. But in my opinion, families who build memories together via a vacation create bonds that strengthen the family.

Of course it was easier to miss school when the children were younger (elementary school), but we still have the children do their lessons on the way down, and we usually have a half-day on our vacation for a little study/relax/pool time. If you go down the first week of school, I would imagine that your children wouldn't have a lot of school work, making it more desirable (and let's be honest, easier on the teacher) than say, mid-September, when they may be gearing up for tests.

I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend that you check with your school administration before booking, though, as not all educators are on the same page.

    Wishing y'all a magical--and memorable--vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
