If there are thunderstorms or heavy rain during my visit to the park, what happens? Does the park close and we have leave? Do they allow you to stay and wait out the weather? Thanks!

Hello Aurora! I know you must be so excited to be visiting Walt Disney World Resort in one week!

This is a great question as it typically rains 10-12 days during the month of May at Walt Disney World Resort.

Typically, we pack rain gear and good non slip shoes to wear in the theme parks. Each morning, we look at the weather and decide whether or not to take our rain gear with us or leave it in our Resort hotel room. If needed, there are some really cute rain ponchos in merchandise locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort when rain is approaching.

Unless the weather is really bad (hurricane level), the theme parks don't typically close. However, safety is the first concern so some attractions may shut down until the weather clears.

Many Guests go back to their Resort hotels during rainy weather. We have made some absolutely magical memories on rainy days. We put our rain gear on and enjoy every minute. If we see lightning or the rain is too heavy, we step inside an attraction, shop or restaurant and enjoy ourselves until the weather clears.

Several years ago, my husband and I were with our kiddos at Epcot. It was the end of a long day and we were waiting to see Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. The skies opened up and there was a downpour. We were next to 2 lovely ladies. They were sisters who had traveled to Walt Disney World Resort from Ohio. Our kiddos were fast asleep and very comfortable in their stroller under their rain cover. For 40 minutes, we sat in the rain with those 2 sweet sisters laughing and talking while my kiddos slept and my husband kept an eye on the radar. The rain cleared, my kiddos work up and the 6 of us enjoyed one of the most memorable Illuminations: Reflections of Earth experiences I have ever had. Yes - we were soaked but we had an amazing time! It's all perspective and at Walt Disney World Resort, it's all magical! Enjoy your visit rain or shine!
