Ahoy Dorothy, and thanks for pulling alongside here at planDisney with your question!
Ah, your compass is
nearly pointing North...you didn't perchance acquire it from a certain pirate by the name of Jack Sparrow, did you?
In all seriousness, you are correct that
Disney Cruise Line's return to sailing has led to a few changes in course over the past months, and part of that has included some updated policies and procedures for Port Adventures, but these only apply to Guests travelling with children in certain age groups.
The
"Know Before You Go: Ports of Call" information in "
Your Guide to Updated Experiences" on the Disney Cruise Line website outlines the current procedures for disembarking the ship while in port. As of the November 17, 2021 update, all fully-vaccinated Guests are able to disembark in Ports of Call without purchasing a Disney Cruise Line
Port Adventure. If your crew falls into this category, you're clear to either book a Port Adventure or arrange your own excursions should you so choose!
Now, if you are planning to disembark with any unvaccinated children under 5-years-old, that is the only instance where your crew would be required to be on a Port Adventure.
Even if you aren't in the company of Jake and some of his Neverland Pirates, I do suggest you at least consider a Port Adventure during your itinerary! One of the reasons my family and I nearly always choose Disney Cruise Line Port Adventures is the peace of mind that comes from knowing that since they are coordinated with the ship's arrival and departure times from a given port, should any delay happen, Disney Cruise Line will wait - or arrange transportation to the next Port! Also, if your itinerary changes for any reason, your Port Adventure is completely refundable!
Just remember, these policies are subject to change like the tides, so I'd keep a weather eye on that "Know Before You Go" information, as well as having the
Disney Cruise Line Navigator app handy at all times!
I hope that helps you chart a course for your sailing this May, Dorothy! If you come across any rough waters or have any other questions as you continue planning, feel free to drop me another line!
Fair winds and following seas!
Andrew
