Thinking of taking the amtrak auto train from Lorton,VA to Sanford, FL.Would need to drive from RI to VA to board train.Any moms/dads from RI/MA/CT try this before? How's the car ride to get to VA, traffic, etc.Other option is reg train from RI to NY to FL.

    Hi Tracy,
Your Disney Mom from Ontario here.  I have taken the Amtrack from Lorton and so I can answer all of your questions with the exception of the one about the traffic from RI to VA.

I have mixed feelings about the experience.  The positives:
    - the train station was very easy to find off the interstate
    - the check in process was easy - As I recall, we had to be there by 1pm, train departed 4pm
    - the dinner and breakfast was great
    - loved that I did not have to think about the rest of the drive to Florida!  I started relaxing right away
    - loved that we had time to play cards and watch movies with the kids in the club car
    - easy to get on the highway from Sanford
    - loved that we had our car while in Florida

    The not-so positives:
    - did not sleep well (we sat in coach; a private room, while more expensive, would have been worth it)
    - train got in late (others have told me their train got in early, so could go either way)
    - our car was one of the last to come off...we were on the road by noon (others got their car by 10...so it could go either way).  Give yourself lots of time...don't book any reservations too close to the arrival time.

Tracy, I hope this helps in your decision.  Have a great holiday!
