We're thinking of staying in a tent at Fort Wilderness in Nov or Dec or next year or the year after. I'm wondering what the temp. gets down to at night that time of year. Would you recommend a portable heater?

    Christina:

Our family camps at the fort and was has visited in December.  (Late October is our favorite time of the year, though.)  In December, the weather was mild, even at night, except for one day when we wore sweatshirts and turtlenecks to the parks.

What we've found over the years of camping is that the weather is very unpredictable in Orlando.  You may wear shorts during the day--even in December--but have to bundle up at night.  The average low temp in December is around 50 degrees, but during the day you could see upwards of 75 (and we've seen almost-80).

Tent camping is absolutely doable during that time of year, when most every other place in America can be miserable for the not-so-die-hard.  You are smart to consider a portable heater if you've got one and have the space to tote it, as the only fires that are permitted at the fort are those in small fire pots that are fully enclosed with a screen and covered.  Always better to be safe, than sorry.

FYI: There is an online forum for Disney campers at www.disboards.com.  Look for the camping thread!

    Wishing y'all a magical--and rain-free--vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
