Hello there, Lesley! Greetings from your pals at planDisney! Sending a sprinkle of pixie dust your way from sunny California! I'm absolutely thrilled to hear you're dreaming of visiting the Happiest Place on Earth!
It warms my heart to tell you that Disneyland Resort works incredibly hard to make sure every Guest experiences the magic. They even have a whole section of their website dedicated to
Guests who are neurodivergent, including those who are on the autism spectrum. I’ll be your guide through some helpful resources!
One of my absolute favorite resources is the
Sensory Experience Details guide. This downloadable document provides an overview of every single land, attraction, and experience in both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. It clearly outlines the various types of sensory experiences you may expect with each attraction—from lighting effects, to scents and smells, to whether or not the ride lifts off the ground. The guide even highlights the activities and experiences happening across the various lands throughout the parks.
Another excellent resource is the
Accessibility Planning Guide. It outlines what to expect during your Disneyland visit, from the moment you arrive at the resort, to when it’s time to leave, and everything else in between. You may also find the “Need A Break Locations” section particularly helpful. I understand how exciting and stimulating Disneyland can be—that’s a large part of what makes it so magical! But Guests who experience sensory differences may become overwhelmed more quickly, which is why these rest locations are especially helpful. This portion of the guide outlines areas of the parks that are generally quieter and more relaxing, so your family can take breaks and return to the action when you’re ready.
Now, Lesley, let's talk about experiencing the attractions! Disneyland Resort offers a whole bunch of ways to make it work for everyone, from
Rider Switch to
Attraction Queue Re-Entry or Meet-Up. Many guests with special needs or disabilities also enjoy the accommodations provided by
Disneyland’s Disability Access Service (DAS). This is a convenient option for Guests who are unable to wait in lines for extended periods of time. Once the service is activated, Guests can select attraction return times directly in the
Disneyland mobile app. While waiting for their turn, Guests can explore, grab a Dole Whip, or even meet a character!
Registration is required in order to access DAS. Guests will first need to speak with a Cast Member to determine eligibility. This can be done virtually through the Disneyland website or in-person at Accessibility Services up to 60 days in advance of the visit. The individual who will be requesting to use DAS must be present during the discussion with the Cast Member in order to determine eligibility.
Lesley, I hope this information has you feeling as ready as a Disney Princess preparing for the Royal Ball! Remember, you've got a whole team of planDisney pals ready to help. If more questions pop up, be sure to send them our way! Get those Minnie ears ready and have a wonderfully magical time!
