Thinking about camping in a tent at Wilderness campgrounds in Dec 18 - 25th or July 2010 to cut $. Are there snakes, raccoons or other wildlife to worry about? When it rains is an overhead TARP sufficient are the sites situated so rains do not flood site?

Hi Laura! Although I have not camped in a tent at Fort Wilderness I have stayed in the cabins and know a little bit about the area.

We vacationed this past May at Walt Disney World and stayed in the cabins for ten nights.  It just happened to be the time when Orlando and that part of Florida had all time record rains for it not being a hurricane!  We purposely drove our golf cart around to see how the tenters were holding up as the area was saturated beyond belief and the grounds around the cabins were full of water.  I can happily relate to you that the cabins and all tent campsites were free and clear of being flooded.  The area around some of the sites had water and we saw a playground under water as well but none of the tents and the sites they were on were threatened.  Those were one of a kind of rains so I think you would be fine taking the precautions you would normally take when camping.

Although I did not see any wildlife around our cabin we did hear something on the roof a few nights.  As far as snakes go I can assure you that they keep that reptile under control as much as possible.  With all the rain we figured we just might see something long and slithering while we were there and we did......but at the Yacht Club resort!!!  We never saw a single snake at Fort Wilderness and hardly a bug the whole time we were there and we plan to actually head back this fall and see if we can enjoy it on some drier days!
