Thinking of adjoining rooms for me, husband, and 2 boys (6 and 4). Worried about having kids in room "alone" with a door that they can potentially get outside of the room available to them. If you've used the rooms before, how old were your kid

    Hi Peggy,

Welcome to the Moms Panel!  This is my kind of question, because these are the types of concerns that I have dealt with when traveling with little ones.  I am guessing that you probably meant that you will have connecting rooms (one with an interior door to go between the rooms), as adjoining simply means that they are next to each other.  Sounds silly to note the difference, but I just want to make sure you make the appropriate reservation so there are no surprises when you check in!

Now every child is different, and you know your children best so I am sure that will be able to judge whether or not your children are ready and able to follow your "rules" when staying in their own room.  My children were about the same age as yours when we first did this.  We had a frank discussion with the kids and made it clear that they are only to exit the room from Mom and Dad's side.  We emphasized that it is for their own safety, and they had no problem accepting this rule.  We also used the dead bolt and the upper lock at all times on that door, as I did not want housekeeping and/or maintenance entering that side.  We left the doors open between the rooms, and I felt very comfortable with this arrangement.

As I said before, you know your kids and your comfort level best.  I hope my experience is helpful in making your decision.
