Hi Amy!
Wow, what a special birthday for your son! I am a huge fan of taking Disney trips with just one child at least once. I actually just came home from Disneyland on a mommy/daughter trip with my 2nd daughter. The memories we made are priceless.
Now, having 5 young girls, I had to ask some of my fellow Moms on the Disney Parks Moms Panel what they like to do with their teenage sons. Here are a few of my favorites!
DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park-Yeah, they call it a theme park, because it's like a mecca of video games. Located in Downtown Disney, there are 5 floors of 3D video games, classic video games, and virtual fun! And it's the perfect place to go if the weather is not that stellar. If he's just an average game lover, then the arcades at the Walt Disney World resorts are just as magical.
Surfing Lessons at Typhoon Lagoon-You and your son will put Lilo to shame with these surfing lessons. They are offered on select days before park opening. If surfing is a tad too adventurous, then enjoy the water slides or wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon. You can also join in poolside activities at your Walt Disney World Resort.
The Animation Academy-One of my favorite things to do is visit The Magic of Disney Animation building at Disney's Hollywood Studios. At the Animation Academy, you and your son can learn how to draw a Disney character. You'd be surprised how your drawing comes to life in the short 20-ish minute class by a Disney instructor. Classes run approximately every half-hour.
In all honesty, your son will just appreciate the time spent you you--the coolest mom ever. My daughter loved that I gave her the freedom to choose what SHE wanted to do and choose where to eat.
I hope your son has a magical 12th birthday and may the Force be with you!
Tania
