We are taking our 8 year old son to Disneyland and California Adventure in 2 weeks for his 9th bday for the first time. What do you recommend. I keep looking to make a reservation for something fun and can't seem to find anything, suggestions?

Hiya, Shannon, and thanks for bringing your question to the Disney Parks Moms Panel!

First off, I’m so excited for your son to celebrate his birthday at the Happiest Place on Earth! Be sure to stop by City Hall in Disneyland Park, or Chamber of Commerce in Disney California Adventure Park, to nab him a complimentary birthday button and “1st Visit” button!

My son recently celebrated his 8th birthday at the Disneyland Resort with a few of his closest friends, and he had a blast! If your son is anything like mine, then he may be obsessed with all-things Star Wars right now! If so, I have the perfect itinerary for your family. First off, be sure to arrive at park opening (you can check Park Hours for your arrival date) so you can try to nab a Boarding Group for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. This epic attraction just opened last week, and is currently only available to Guests with a Boarding Group, which can currently only be acquired at park opening after scanning your tickets at Disneyland Park. I recently had the chance to check out this amazing Star Wars adventure, and it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before!

As for reservations, I recommend making a reservation for Oga’s Cantina, the local watering hole in Black Spire Outpost. There are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages for your family to sample, including my son’s favorite, the Blue Bantha. You can also make a reservation for two awesome experiences, including building a custom astromech droid unit at Droid Depot, or creating a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers. I’ve experienced both of these activities with my son, and I would highly recommend them! My son loves carrying his droid around in his special droid backpack (which can be purchased at Droid Depot) whenever we return to Batuu!

Your son is also going to enjoy piloting the fastest ship in the galaxy on Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Currently, this attraction doesn’t have Disney FASTPASS, so I recommend checking the wait time on your Disneyland app

While walking around Batuu, you’ll have the chance to chat with Rey, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and even Storm Troopers and Kylo Ren! My son loves making mischief and being interrogated by the Storm Troopers!

Best wishes for an out-of-this-galaxy birthday celebration, Shannon!
