I will be taking my 12 year old sister on her first Disney cruise next month. My grandmother has guardianship of her and I have already had her sign the consent form to travel with my sister. Do I need to bring any proof of guardianship to the port?

    Ahoy there, Kimberly!

Welcome aboard planDisney! How exciting that your sister’s first-ever Disney cruise is almost here—it sounds like the perfect chance for the two of you to make memories that would make Lilo and Stitch proud! There’s truly something special about introducing someone to the magic of sailing with Captain Mickey for the first time.

It sounds like you’ve done a fantastic job getting everything in shipshape order before embarkation. Since your grandmother has already completed the Authorization for Minor to Travel Without a Parent or Legal Guardian form, you’re well on your way. Just be sure to bring the original signed form (no copies) with you in your carry-on bag—you’ll need to present it during the check-in process at the terminal.

While you’re not required to bring official proof of guardianship, I do recommend having a digital copy tucked away just in case. Think of it like Genie’s lamp—you probably won’t need it, but if an unexpected situation arises (like the very rare need to disembark at a different port), you’ll be glad you have it ready to grant you a little peace of mind. A quick photo saved on your phone can make travel through airports or customs smoother if something changes unexpectedly.

Also, just a quick reminder to pack your sister’s passport or original state-issued birth certificate, depending on your itinerary. If you’re sailing round-trip from the U.S. to the Bahamas or Caribbean, those documents will have you ready to set sail without a hitch! Since she’s under 16, no government-issued photo ID is required.

You’re about to experience one of those “core memory” moments together—standing side by side as the ocean stretches out before you and that first bit of sea breeze hits your face. I still remember watching my own kids see the ship’s Atrium for the first time, their jaws dropping like they’d just stepped into Belle’s ballroom—it’s pure Disney magic from the very start.

I hope this helps you feel ready for your upcoming adventure! Before you know it, you and your sister will be sharing Mickey-shaped ice cream bars on deck, laughing through game shows, and realizing that sometimes the most magical journeys begin with family by your side.

Sea ya real soon with boo-tiful nights and frightfully fun days,
    Dustin
