Hi there! We are taking our first trip to Disney this spring break 2015. We have three children, our middle child being diabetic. She is only 7 years old and her diagnosis is fairly new. Waiting in long lines may affect her blood sugar. What can we do?

Hi, Melissa.  I know it can be a pretty scary diagnosis, especially when you are embarking on your first big vacation like this.  It can be tough to know what to expect.

The first thing you want to do is outline your plans with her doctor.  In some cases, the extra exercise, altered diet, and even being out in the sun can impact blood sugars, so you'll want to know how you can prepare for those things.

You can obtain a Disability Access Service Card for your daughter while you are at the theme parks.  This works similar to the FastPass system.  You will decide which attraction you would like to go to, and give the pass to the Cast Member at the front of the queue.  They will mark your card with a return time that coincides with the ride wait time.  For example, if you see a line that is 30 minutes long, you will be given a return time that allows you to come back in 20-30 minutes to be admitted to the attraction with minimal waiting.  The card can be used in conjunction with the FastPass+ system, so I recommend you book those reservations online before you go on vacation.

I wish you and your family an absolutely magical first visit to Walt Disney World!
