    I am taking my daughter & family to Disney World in Jan. 2011. We have reserved a cabin at Fort Wilderness. Do we need an electric cart to get around, or can we drive the car if it is too far to walk.

    Your vacation is almost here!

    At Fort Wilderness, once you park your car at your cabin, you need to have a mindset that you'll only be driving it to leave the fort...not to tour the fort's campus or drive from one place to other. Cars are not permitted to drive you from one destination to the other around the resort. This allows for a relatively quiet and slower-paced resort. I think you'll enjoy the atmosphere it provides.

    With that in mind, Disney has internal buses to take you from place to place. They whisk you to all the major points of interest at the resort: Pioneer Hall where you'll find the Hoop Dee Doo Revue, the stables, Trail's End, and Mickey's Backyard BBQ; Meadows Trading Post along with the bike barn, main pool, Chip 'n' Dale's campfire, and canoe rentals; and the Outpost where you'll load buses for other destinations like the theme parks.

    Without knowing your family's mobility issues, it's hard to know whether to recommend that you absolutely have to rent the golf cart. Some families get one for the convenience of skipping the buses but at $59 a day, I can think of a lot more things we could spend on our family if it's just going to sit at the pier all day while we visit Magic Kingdom.... Our family, typically, will rent a golf cart for a few days of our stay, not so much for getting us from one place to another faster than the bus, but for our favorite pastime, looping. We enjoy riding through the camping loops to look at decorations when we're there for a holiday or just to see other RVs and daydream.

    Because you're visiting in January, the resort shouldn't run out of golf carts. I would suggest waiting until you check in to your cabin to reserve one. Once on property, get the lay of the land, so to speak, including the closest bus stop, and see if it's something your family needs or simply wants.
