Taking a cruise in February, with two stops in Mexico. I want it to be a Christmas surprise, so I'm concerned with getting our passports on time. I read if it's round trip that starts and ends in the U.S. they aren't necessary...is that true?

Hey there, ahoy there, Jason, and welcome to planDisney. A voyage with Captain Mickey sounds perfect right now, I can feel the ocean breeze right now.

Travel document requirements for Disney Cruise Line sailings are very specific. United States citizens planning for a closed-loop Disney Cruise Line sailing (starting and ending in the same port) with stops in Mexico are not required to have a valid US Passport (or Passport Card or Trusted Traveler card like NEXUS or FAST). However, Disney Cruise Line highly recommends you have a passport (valid through the duration of the sailing) for each member of your party.

If you are a US citizen traveling without a US Passport that is valid through the duration of the voyage, there are other options as noted below depending on age.

Guests over the age of 15 must have a Physical Government-issued photo ID (digital/mobile state-issued IDs are not acceptable to sail) AND

    • Original or copy of their state-issued birth certificate OR A
    •  Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services OR
    • Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State

Guests 15 years and younger must have

    • Original or copy of their state-issued birth certificate

planDisney Pro Tip: I recommend you expedite your US Passport application to make traveling easier. We have done it twice and received our passports within 6-8 weeks. It was worth the extra money for us.

Jason, your cruise is in 79 days from today. I know you will have the best time. Please feel free to write me back directly with any follow-up questions to help you get shipshape.

Enjoy making many Magical Memories on the high seas.
    ~Jason
