Hi! We are taking our boys (almost 5 & 2.5 yrs old) to WDW for our older son's bday. This will be their first Disney experience and I know they will go nuts over all the stores with character toys, etc. Any tips on limiting the souvenir gimmies?

Hi Lisa! Walt Disney World is the absolute best place to celebrate a birthday for anyone in your family. Turning five with Mickey Mouse and friends will be a memory you all will treasure.

You are correct in that the stores will be full of fabulous new toys and games that your sons will want. It is easy to go overboard and many guests end up buying a new suitcase to get all of their new items back home. But you can keep it in check in many ways.

I suggest you consider getting Disney Dollars for the boys. This is real money anywhere on Disney property in all Disney stores in the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs. They will have fun seeing actual Disney money and learning how to spend it carefully. Another great idea is to give them Disney Gift Cards with a specific amount on each. As they see a new toy you can explain that perhaps all of their gift card will be gone for that item and if they choose something else they will have money left. They will keep the card with them (or you will for safety sake) and they will tend to think long and hard if they want to spend it all on one item or many items. You set the amount and the card gives them the real idea that they have some control of their choices if that makes sense. Both are great learning tools when it comes to money and it alleviates the "I want this and I want that" that kids tend to have in any toy store. They ultimately make their choices.

I am sure you are so excited about this upcoming trip for your family. If there is anything else we can help you with let us know!
