We are surprising my children with a trip to Disney, and will be calling to register for a DAS pass. I was wondering if I could have my son join us while registering without him knowing what it is about? I would love to keep this a surprise!

Hiya Jennifer - welcome to planDisney!

The ability to pre-register for the Disability Access Service (DAS) using online video chat is a fantastic new option that can help you streamline your planning process. Please keep in mind that there can be a wait (sometimes significant) to take advantage of this option. I simply mention that because it may impact your plans for keeping registration, and your upcoming vacation, a secret!

If your son is the Guest who will be registered for DAS, he will need to be present during the video chat portion of the pre-registration when his photo will be taken. Here's where I think you can get a bit tricky! If it's possible for him to be somewhere else at the beginning of the video chat, you should be able to privately explain your situation to the Cast Member you're chatting with. My hope is that they would be on board with your surprise and agree not to talk about any magic or pixie dust while your son is also on the chat.

You will be on the Walt Disney World Resort website during the video chat, and while I've asked a couple of friends who have also recently completed the video pre-registration, none of us can remember if the video chat opens in a new window, or if it stays within the main website page, potentially still showing other Disney clues. We're getting into the weeds here, but if that's the case, you could try to strategically resize the window to block other content from view or move other windows over parts of the one with the video chat to cover up any visual clues.

As a last resort, you could even try to enlist the Cast Member to help you create a false story for the video chat. Perhaps you were chosen for a survey about your last Walt Disney World Resort vacation or were contacted for market research about your son's favorite characters or attractions! I'm just brainstorming here, and of course, there is no guarantee that the Cast Member on the video chat is able or willing to help perpetuate your lie, but I think it's worth a try! It really all depends on how the video chat shows up and how savvy your little Mouseketeer is.

Jennifer, the main benefit of pre-registration is the ability to select up to two DAS Advance selections for each day of your visit. These are one-hour windows where the DAS-registered Guest and up to five additional Guests in their party can use the Lightning Lane to access an attraction with minimum wait. These are booked after the video chat, usually via the chat box, so if you shuffle him out of the room you shouldn't have trouble booking these in secret.

If you're worried that the video chat might ruin the surprise, you can always register for DAS in person at any Guest Relations location within a Theme Park once you arrive instead! You'll still be able to select DAS return times for attractions throughout your visit, you just won't have additional pre-booked DAS Advance selections for the first two days, but would be able to book up to two of these per day for the rest of your trip (availability may be limited).

I hope this information is helpful, Jennifer - swing by with more questions any time!
