This summer, we are considering a last-minute trip to Walt Disney World for our family of 5 (3 kids 8 and under) instead of a beach vacation. Are there any resorts that offer beach-like access where kids could build a sandcastle, for example? Thank you!

    Hello, Emily,

Thank you for sending your question to planDisney.  Some of my family's best trips have been the last-minute ones where we had little planned beforehand. Some of our greatest memories have come from eating at restaurants that we had never tried before since we selected from those with openings the day we wanted to eat.  I think many had flown under our radar, and we are so thankful to have tried them. Of course, now the list of restaurants that we always want to visit again keeps growing!

The second I read your question, I immediately thought of Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort (they are essentially one resort). They are located next to EPCOT so it is a short walk to the theme park, but even better guests can access the Disney Skyliner to take it to Disney's Hollywood Studios. But what makes this resort an ideal match for what you'd like is Stormalong Bay. It is a shared pool for both resorts that is essentially a small water park (it covers 3 acres!). The pool is a sand-bottom pool with fun little surprises like mini-whirlpools, and there is a large sand bar with shallow water perfect for building sandcastles. Did I mention there is also a lazy river with plenty of inner tubes to enjoy a relaxing float?  And if that isn't enough, how about 3 spas and a water slide that leaves from a shipwreck?

In addition to this pool, there are Movies Under the Stars and Campfires in the evening. Incredibly yummy ice cream treats, including the infamous Kitchen Sink, are available at the Beaches & Cream Soda Shop. Within walking distance, Disney's Boardwalk offers lots of fun happenings, too, with arcade games, entertainers, and bike rentals.  My family also always includes a miniature golf tournament when we visit, and Fantasia Gardens & Fairways Miniature Golf is also within walking distance.

By the way, there are currently some Special Offers that may provide you with a discounted room this summer. As you look over the resorts and find you have more questions, please let us know.

    Wishing you a magical trip!
