Do you have any suggestions for the automatic flushes in the bathrooms? We are going in January and my 5 year old son is terrified of them to the point that I am afraid he will hold it too long to avoid going.

    Hi Rochelle:

I'm the parent of a 5 and 4 year old.  While I can't do anything about the sound of the toilet flushes, hopefully I can give you some tips so your son won't be afraid of using the bathroom at your Resort.  You know your son best, so your instincts should govern.  That being said, I would try to test out how loud the flush is first when your son is not in the room.  If you think he could handle the noise, then you can see how he reacts to the flush and not call attention to the toilet being flushed.  Another approach is to close the bathroom door and turn on background noise (such as the sink, tv, radio, any handheld portable video games you may have) to try to mask the noise of the toilet flushing.  What worked with my eldest son and a loud toilet at his day care was to call attention to the loud flush and act like the loud noise was the funniest think in the whole world.  We would cover our ears, make exaggerated faces, and laugh about the loud flush.  You could also try a reward system, where you purchase Mickey stickers and you give your son a sticker every time he successfully uses the potty.  Your son can even brag about his achievements to the characters he meets in the Parks.  The characters love celebrating with Guests, no matter what the occasion.

Hopefully one, or a combination of one, of these tips help your son adjust to the bathrooms at Disney World.  This should be great vacation.  Enjoy.
