Hi there: struggling with whether to buy Genie+ for quick line access (Disneyland). Going on what's predicted to be very low volume day, and we're 5 people, so cost of Genie on top of tickets is significant. How much return can I really expect?

    Hey there Adam,

Welcome to planDisney and thank you so much for your question. You have asked the million dollar question!

I will say upfront that the answer to the question of whether to purchase Disney Genie+ Service ultimately depends on your comfort level with your budget for the trip. You will have amazing fun and make new magical memories whether you add this service or not!

Having said that, the Disney Genie+ Service comes with additional features beyond the ability to make Lighting Lane selections. For example, when I visit with my family, the perk of unlimited digital downloads for Disney Photo Pass photos feels about equal in value to us and we make it a point to take a lot of these photos to document our trip.

Personally, I think of this decision in terms of the opportunity cost. Even on lighter crowd days, some attractions can still have lengthy standby lines, but from what I've experienced, the Lightning Lane lines are much shorter. I'm a "trip optimizer" so to me, it's almost always worth it to save as much time as possible that would have been spent waiting in a standby line to fill it instead with another activity like a character experience, sit-down meal, or show.

However, there are also trips where the opportunity cost is a bit different for us if our budget is tighter. For these trips, it's not so much time but experiences that we would have to trade. As you noted, the cost for Disney Genie+ Service can add up quickly, and sometimes our trip budget makes it so that we would either need to decide between an experience like building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop or Disney Genie+ Service.

In all of these cases, I think it just depends on your group's goals for your trip. If it's to relax, meander, and enjoy being in the Disneyland Resort then maybe the added cost isn't worth it. If it's to experience as many attractions as possible, then maybe it is worth it!

Thanks again Adam. I hope you and your group enjoy your trip!

    Have a Magical Day,
