We are staying at Ft. Wilderness cabins and have a dinner reservation at the Grand Floridian. How is the best way to get there and how much time should we allow?

The fastest way to get there would, of course, be by taxi; that trip would take about 10 minutes.  If you would rather not pay the cab fare you can certainly utilize Disney transportation, just be prepared for a longer trip.  From the Ft. Wilderness Resort and Campground, you'll want to go to the marina.  From there, you can catch a boat that will deliver you to the Contemporary Resort.  Once there, board the resort monorail.  It will take you to the Grand Floridian.  This trip will take you at least 40 minutes, but to be on the safe side, I would allow for an hour transportation time.  On the bright side, you'll get to experience a few different modes of transportation and have a peek around the Contemporary as you make your way to dinner!  :)
