We are staying at the swan for the first time. Can I activate and use our old magic bands? Can I use them to charge to a credit card since the swan doesn't participate? My son is traveling with his HS band. Can he use his band for charging purposes?

    Hi Debra!

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel! How exciting that your Mouseketeer will be visiting Walt Disney World Resort with his High School Band! And what great parents you are for wanting to be there to chEAR him on! You'll all remember this experience for yEARs!

Once you've been given or have purchased a MagicBand, it will always be linked to it's original person to serve as your Disney Theme Park admission ticket, FastPass+ reservation holder, and way to grab any and all PhotoPass photos taken of you and your connected friends and family as you all go on with your Disney Days. You are more than welcome to bring your same bands back as many trips as you'd like. They were initially promised to retain their battery life for 2 years, but some guests have reported back that theirs have lasted much longer. That said, should the magic inside your bands no longer be working, Guest Relations would love to help see what the problem is, or you can always pull up your tickets in your My Disney Experience Mobile App.

In order to use a MagicBand for charging purposes, a guest does need to be staying at a Disney Resort Hotel. Technically the bands and everything else about your vacation are all connected to your My Disney Experience Profile. However, charging privileges and Disney Dining Plans run on an additional system linked back to your active resort hotel reservation.

As far as your son goes, if his group is not staying at a Disney Resort Hotel, they also will not have charging privileges. However, if they are staying on site, contact his band trip organizer to ask how they are handing MagicBand Charges. For groups of guests under 18-years-old, charges can be turned off completely by the organizer and there might not be anything that can be done by an individual parent. Some group contracts allow for individual bands to be activated for charging but an authorization form needs to be submitted before arrival. But, since you'll be at Walt Disney World Resort, you might be able to stop by his Resort Hotel or even Guest Services and set his band to allow charging.

If none of the above is looking good, and you do want him to have some spending money, I do have a great back up solution: Disney Gift Cards. You could either buy a few cards and give them to him over the different days of your visit, OR you could purchase electronic gift cards and email or text him a photo of their codes each day of the trip.

I hope this helped to better plan your upcoming visit, Debra, and We'll See You Real Soon!
