We are staying at Port Orleans Riverside in May 2012 and my husband would like to take advantage of the fishing. Can he bring his own fishing equipment and bypass the rental? Will he be able to fish in areas other than the cane pole area?

    Hi Jessica!

There are incredible fishing excursions throughout Walt Disney World and your husband could use his own fishing gear on those trips.  You want to look into booking a bass fishing tour.  Excursions typically last two hours, though longer tours can be scheduled.  You can schedule a tour from Port Orleans Riverside and from other resorts at Walt Disney World.  Reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance through the Walt Disney World website or by calling Disney at (407) 939-2277 or (407) 929-3474.

Unfortunately, however, only cane pole fishing is allowed in the small fishing pond on 'Ol Man Island at Port Orleans Riverside.  It's mostly just a fun activity for families as opposed to serious fishing.  I recommend your husband go on a fishing tour around Walt Disney World instead.  Disney's lakes are stocked with large mouth bass making the trips a lot of fun.

I hope this helps!  Write back if you have any more questions!
