If staying off property, how do you get to the character dinners (Play and Dine, Chef Mickey, and 1900 Park Fare)? We will have a car. Do we drive/park at a particular park and use DW transportation? Is there someway to drive directly to the resorts?

Yes, to all of the above.  We have driven to the Resorts and well, got lost...its very confusing, and it takes one misread sign, and you're heading into a loop somewhere.  We found it was more stressful, my backseat driving, and watching for signs, than it was just to take the Disney World Transit System.  Most would say, go to the TTC and change there, but we cheat.  If we have a breakfast reservation at the Polynesian's Ohana, and the Animal Kingdom has early magic hours, we hop the bus to Animal Kingdom, and then pick up the Polynesian Resort Bus to the Resort.  The thought is, if its Early Magic Hours, then more buses will be running to and from the Animal Kingdom.  The same would work if it were Magic Kingdom, easier actually, because then all you would need to do is hop on the Monorail once you have arrived.  If you would like to drive, just ask Guest Relations your best route.  They will provide you a map, and a general direction.  Your Resort parking hanger for your rear view mirror is your ticket in and out of the parking lots.  You may have to let the attendant know you have reservations at the Resort, and he or she will let you pass through.  Have a great trip!!!
