we are staying at caribbean beach resort and going to chef mickey at the contemporary, we plan to take a bus from CBR to MK then monorail to contemp but can we take the monorail from MK to dinner w/o passes to MK for that day?

Hi Leah, Chef Mickey's is a great choice for dinner! The make-your-own-sundae bar is a favorite for our family. Yes, you can take the monorail from the Magic Kingdom (or Epcot) without passes. This is because the monorail stations are located outside of the main gates to the Parks. The bus stop at the Magic Kingdom is actually walking distance to the Contemporary Resort. In fact, it's a closer walk from the bus stop to the Contemporary than it is from the bus stop to the monorail station. Hope this helps and enjoy your vacation!
