We will be staying at Cabins in Fort Wilderness in September. We want to rent a golf cart. My question is do we have to rent from WDW and its cost, or are there trusty less expensive approved vendors we can use?

As they say in the wilderness "Howdy Susan!" and welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel.
My family and I truly adore staying within the peaceful and rustic surroundings of the Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort.  One of the things we most enjoy is the freedom the cabins provide us to spread out and relax in plus we love that we can prepare our own meals if we so choose in the fully equipped kitchen or outdoors on the provided grill.  It may be helpful for you to know that Guests can pre-order groceries for delivery direct to their cabins via this handy Disney's Fort Wilderness Cabins - Grocery Order Form.
I've always thought the jolly looking golf carts many folks seem to use at The Fort seemed like a whole lot of fun and of course would provide a great way to explore this rather expansive Disney Resort.  Although I've never arranged golf cart rental from another provider Guests can certainly arrange 4 Seat Golf Cart Rental direct from Disney up to 1 whole yEar prior to arrival or have the additional option to provide their own golf cart which must adhere to the current Vehicles, Carts and Recreational Devices - Rules & Regulations.
Wishing you an extra magical upcoming September visit to the magic of Walt Disney World Resort.
