I see that you have stayed at Shades of Green. I am planning my family's 1st Disney trip for March. I am trying to decide whether we should stay at SoG & buy our own meals or use the Disney Military resort discount & get a dining plan. My girls are

I remember planning my family's first trip, Denise.  So much fun, but also a tad overwhelming.  You're doing great by starting your plans now!  As for which resort to call home during your stay, having stayed at Shades of Green as well as several Disney resorts, I can honestly tell you that my personal preference is for Disney resorts.  Shades of Green does offer spacious accommodations in close proximity to the Magic Kingdom at an unbeatable price.  And for many guests, that is enough.  I'm the kind of Disney-goer, though, who enjoys full immersion in the magic, 24/7.  I appreciate the theming, service, and sprinkle of pixie dust so prevalent throughout Disney's resort hotels.  Not to mention the fact that, eating your way around the world on the Disney dining plan adds a whole new level of fun to any trip.  In fact, because your travel dates are in March, you may be eligible for the free dining plan promotion.  I'd definitely recommend pricing your vacation with the military room discount (in which case you wouldn't qualify for free dining) as well as rack rates with the free dining plan and see which is a better deal for your family.

One more quick thought: in order to be eligible for the dining plan, you must purchase a package that includes theme park tickets as well as resort accommodations.  If you're planning to use the heavily discounted military tickets, you won't be eligible so that might answer your question right there.

I'm happy to help should you have any more questions, Denise!

Given your inclination to plan a magical trip, I can already tell we have a lot in common. I'm Darcie, and my friends would be the first to tell you that Disney trip planning (especially dining!) is my love language. Of course, the vacations my family enjoys today look much different than they did when our kids were little, but while some of our favorite activities have evolved, Disney destinations still top our travel wish lists.
