Hello, is my son’s drivers permit an acceptable form of government documentation to accompany his birth certificate? He does not have his drivers license yet and is over 15 years old.

Ahoy there, Lynn. Welcome aboard planDisney! Thank you for cruising our way with your question.

I see that you are setting sail for your Disney Cruise this month! With time quickly approaching, it’s important that you have all of the required documents with you when it is time to board. I’d be happy to outline the requirements for you.

The Disney Cruise Line states the following for children over the age of 15 who are traveling to The Bahamas, Caribbean, Pacific Coast, Bermuda or Canada on cruises that are sailing from (and returning to the same port) Port Canaveral, Miami, Galveston, San Diego, San Juan, New Orleans and New York: If the children over the age of 15 do not have an original U.S. Passport, U.S. Passport Card, or Trusted Traveler Card, they must provide either an Original or copy of their state-issued birth certificate AND Government-issued photo ID. An Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State AND Government-issued photo ID is also acceptable, or an Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services AND Government-issued photo ID. You can read more about the required travel documentation on the Disney Cruise Line website.

It’s important to know whether or not the permit that you have for your son is considered to be a Government-issued photo ID. If the permit does not include a photo, you will need to obtain a photo ID prior to sailing. This may be possible at your local DMV or Post Office.

I’m sending an extra helping of pixie-dust your way so that you will be able to have the correct documentation in time for your cruise and that everything is smooth sailing ahead.

If you’d like some recommendations about what to pack, here’s a handy packing list
And a quick tip before we depart: I recommend that you bring a swimsuit in the day bag that you carry on to the ship. After you enjoy a delicious lunch, you can change into your suit and enjoy the pools onboard. I love to kick off my vacation by splashing into the fun right away. Remember a hat and sunscreen too!

Have a wonderful voyage. Be sure to cruise back to us if you have more questions. We are always happy to help.

    Bon Voyage,

    Adrianna
