My son's birthday is Sept. 20th we are planning on being at WDW on the 26th would he be eligible for any of the birthday celebration gifts that they do for birthday kids or would we have had to of been there right on his birthday?

To take advantage of the "Free on Your Birthday" promotion, you do have to be at WDW on your actual birthday. Guests are required to prove it's their birthday with proper ID, as described HERE.

If you are celebrating your birthday at WDW, but not on the actual date, there are many other things you can do: have your room decorated, wear a free birthday button, get a cake delivered, take a special tour, and so on. You just won't be able to enter the park for free.
