My son turns 7 1 wk after we leave, I realize that you must be at WDW on the day of your b-day to get free admission. Is it true you can still celebrate their b-day by getting a cake where dine and they can get a b-day badge upon entering the park?

Hi Melanie!  Yes you can celebrate anything on any day during your vacation but this years big birthday celebration promotion about getting into a park free must be done only on the actual day.  My own children have holiday birthdays so we weren't always at Disney but we would choose another day to celebrate their birthday!

Most of the Disney restaurants have small birthday cakes available for you to have to finish off a celebration dinner.  Request this when you check-in at the podium.  If you would like something larger or more intricate you can call the cake hotline, 407-827-2253, to discuss those choices.  You will need to give at least 48 hours notice for these cakes.

By all means pick up your birthday badge at the parks.  I just returned from a visit and it was fun to see people choosing celebration pins to wear for all occasions.  Everywhere I went the cast members were wishing them Happy Birthday or asking about their special reason to celebrate.  Your son will love the added attention!
