My son is going on a trip with school. He has a magic band that we use on family trips. He has to set up his own my Disney experience for the trip to use genie plus correct? Can he link his own current magic band to that account?

Hey Howdy Hey Jill and welcome back to planDisney!

Thank you so much for stopping by with your question about your son's My Disney Experience account. I will be happy to get you more information on setting up his account and checking on his MagicBand status. Let's get this wagon train a-movin' and get you going!

The first thing you are going to want to do is to ensure he is the owner of his account. If you set it up for him when he was under the age of 13, you may have been the owner of his account. As long as your son is 13 years or older and has an email account, he will be able to take ownership of his account. What you can do from your My Disney Experience account, if you are the current owner, is to go under the "My Family & Friends" section and look for his name. If you click on his name and the system recognizes he is at least 13 years old, you should see an option after you click on "Settings" to "Share Plans with (your son's name)". You will be prompted to put in an email address for him which will send him a link to then take ownership of his account. Not to worry though, when making plans together, you are still connected and will still be able to make all plans with him included!

Considering nothing on his account is new, you should be all set concerning his MagicBand. What he can do from there is to check to make sure it is connected. From his account, you will go to the "My MagicBands & Cards" section. Once there, you should see all the MagicBands and cards that may be linked to his account. As long as the MagicBand he wants to take is linked, he should be all set.

One quick note on MagicBands pertains to the battery life. Depending on sources, MagicBands generations 1 and 2 have a lifespan of 1-3 years. If his MagicBand is around this age or older, I have heard certain functions still might be able to be accessed such as tapping into the parks but others may not such as getting ride photos and certain experiences in the parks. He can always try it out and as long as it works like he wants it to, he should be all set. In the event it may not, he still has two options.

The first option would be the purchase of a new MagicBand or MagicBand+. The new MagicBand+ is the next-level experience in the parks. He would have the opportunity to use his MagicBand+ just like his previous one, but other features will make the parks come to life. He will be able to take part in becoming a Bounty Hunter in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and even be part of the nighttime fireworks shows. There is an extra cost with this upgrade, but let's also talk about the free option.

Disney's MagicMobile Service is a free service to set up through your My Disney Experience app on your smartphone. Simply log into your app, tap the three horizontal lines on the bottom right and then the tile "Disney MagicMoble". Follow the prompts on the screen to set up the pass and then he should be all set! This will be used very similar to the MagicBand. Instead of tapping his wrist, he would tap his phone to the touchpoints to access his Lightning Lane access and tickets to the parks. Either way, this should be a seamless way to access the Magic for his upcoming trip.

Best of luck getting everything set up and I hope your son has a Magical time! Please feel free to stop back if you have any further questions, we are always happy to help!
