Hi Nicole!
It is so funny you ask this question because my family is going to experience Mickey's Backyard BBQ this May!! Since I know you don't want to wait that long for an answer, I asked some of my incredible friends on the MOMS panel for their expert advise! MOMS Panelist Allison has experienced Mickey's Backyard BBQ a couple of time, and her boys loved it (5 & 8 when they were last there). She did say the beginning is a little crazy when the Disney characters come out. All the kids (and parents) rush out there to meet Mickey and friends to take pictures and to shake hands. However, the crowd does calm down once everyone begins to eat and dance. Speaking of dancing, there is one large main dance floor and 2 smaller ones where the Disney characters rotate among them. MOMS Panelist Kaylene said her youngest girl is shy and did not know that she felt like she could get up close to the characters for a while. However, when the dance floor started to clear out, her big brother helped her boot scoot her way over to meet Mickey Mouse! Allison also said the characters seemed to do a good job of trying to pay attention to all of the kids. During the breaks, they usually had a character or two just outside the pavilion where you could take pictures with the Disney characters. Allison's family was able to get pics with Goofy and Chip & Dale as they came into the pavilion. Mickey and Minnie were just outside after the festivities as well. The consensus on the perfect age to enjoy Mickey's Backyard BBQ is varied. From my "scientific" poll, I would say anywhere from five to ten years old. It looks like your son will be nine when you come back. I hope this helps you in your planning! If you have other questions, please let me know! Have a magical day!
