My son and I will be on the maiden voyage of the Dream. He turns 14 the day before the cruise. On the dress-up night, should he wear a shirt and tie or casual jacket w/open collar? Is the jacket even necessary? He likes to wear khakis & hawaiian shi

    Hi, Michele!

Congratulations on being on the Inaugural Cruise for Disney's Dream --  you and your family are very fortunate! I'm actually less than 24 hours from stepping onto the ship myself,  and I'm beside myself with excitement and anticipation. I will certainly be taking copious notes for all the guests who ask me their cruise vacation questions!

I also have a teen son, and he certainly doesn't enjoy anything other than shorts and tees. However, I consider a cruise a special experience and one which shouldn't be treated as a regular vacation. Plus, I love the picture- (and memory-) making opportunities when my entire family looks nice.

With that said, I don't think your son needs a coat and tie; I think that some nice khaki pants and a open-collar shirt will be fine. Then, on a more casual night, he can break out a Hawaiian shirt! Oh, I hope that you all have a wonderful adventure together and that you savor every moment.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
