I would like to take my son to Disney World this summer. He will be 5 years old. My husband started talking to other parents and they are saying that he will be too young to enjoy or remember it. What is a good age to do everything (not older wild rides)?

    Rebecca:

I get this question a lot, so you're not alone...

There's a fine line between a child being old enough to remember a Disney vacation and one too old to experience the wonderment of Characters like Mickey and Minnie along with attractions like Winnie the Pooh and PlayHouse Disney not to mention Character Meals.

We've taken each of our children at different ages for their first visit: from 6 1/2 down to 2 1/2.  The cutest pictures are of the 2 1/2-year-old hugging Winnie the Pooh, afterall, he didn't know Pooh was any different from who we'd read about in the book. But yes, his memories of that trip come from mostly pictures.

Our best visits came when our youngest was 5.  We celebrated his birthday a year ago and returned to Disney for the first time in a year as a family this past weekend. I've been amazed at what he wanted to do again based on his memories of our visit last year: Chef Mickey's (for their waffles), T-Rex (for its dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets) and just so you don't think everything we do in our family is eat, he wanted to make sure that he received his "driver's license" on the Tomorrowland Speedway (undoubtedly because he remembered it from last year).  None of these memories were sparked by pictures (for those who know me well, know I rarely have a camera).

I wouldn't disregard your friends' advice, as you know your child better than us at the Mom's Panel. But I think next summer sounds like the perfect time for your child's first visit.

Wishing y'all a magical, memorable vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
