My son is 14 yo with Asperger's. He doesn't like loud or fast rides and is often too big for the rides he would go on. He does like Star Wars but is too old for the Jedi Training (he was bummed!). Any suggestions on activities for him?

    Hello Catherine!

Thanks so much for stopping by the Disney Parks Moms Panel. I hope you are having a magical week.

My son is autistic with sensory issues as well and I can tell you my biggest trick for getting him to go on rides that he may otherwise think is too loud… Noise cancelling headphones. We use the Pelter junior brand because they are inexpensive and work very well. He wears them throughout the entire day at the parks and it really helps cut down on the noise and sensitivity he may otherwise experience.

I would also talk to a Cast Member at Guest Relations upon arrival at any of the parks. They can tell you about a great program called the Disability Access Service Card. This card works much like a Fastpass where you can choose an attraction and they will give you a time to return. That cuts down on the wait times within the traditional lines that may get loud due to overly excited younger guests.

As far as attractions go, you can search the Walt Disney World Resort attractions by age or thrill level. My son also prefers a lot of rides geared to younger kids so we search a couple age levels below his and he loves to pick and choose and plan his day. Instead of participating in the Jedi Training, I highly recommend going to the Star Wars Launch Bay and visiting Kylo Ren and Chewbacca! They love to take photos with guests and I tell the Cast Members at the Launch Bay that my son is autistic and they will often cater the experience to him and give him extra time to get comfortable with the characters.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you need anything else as you plan your upcoming visit!

    See you real soon!
