I want to do a smash cake for my granddaughters 1st birthday in September to take pictures in front of the castle. Do I have to have a reservation at one of the restaurant in order to get a cake or can I pick it up?

    Hi, Michelle!

What a pixie-dusted way to celebrate your granddaughter's 1st birthday - with a visit to Walt Disney World Resort! You will be making so many wonderful memories with your little princess at Magic Kingdom Park. There's no more iconic way to celebrate a first birthday than with a smash cake, and tons of photos to remember the day! Cinderella Castle will make the perfect backdrop for your festive celebration.

Celebration cakes can be arranged for Guests with reservations at participating Table Service restaurants, and can pre-ordered for your special day. If I were to do a smash cake at Magic Kingdom, I'd handle it one of four ways:

    1) Make an Advance Dining Reservation at one of Magic Kingdom's table service restaurants and arrange to have a small Celebration Cake delivered, which you can ask to be boxed up to take outside for the photo. (Participating restaurants - Be Our Guest Restaurant, Cinderella's Royal Table, The Crystal Palace, Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen, Liberty Tree Tavern, The Plaza Restaurant, Tony's Town Square Restaurant)
    2) Purchase a fancy cupcake in Magic Kingdom Park to use for the smash cake photos. (Cupcakes can be found at Main Street Bakery/Starbucks, and Main Street Confectionery)
    3) Pre-order and pick up a delicious cake from Amorette's Patisserie in Disney Springs prior to visiting Magic Kingdom Park, and bring it with you for your smash cake photos. You can choose from a selection of petit cakes and Disney-inspired character cakes, and they come in a gorgeous keepsake box.
    4) Guests of select Disney Resorts Collection hotels may be able to use Mobile Ordering in the My Disney Experience app to pick up a Mickey Mouse Celebration Cake from an onsite Quick Service restaurant. Check your resort's dining locations for availability.

To find out more about ordering a specialty Celebration Cake, you can make a dining reservation and request a cake by calling (407) WDW-DINE. You can also make an Advance Dining Reservation online, and then call the Walt Disney World Cake Ordering Hotline at (407) 827-2253 to add a cake order to your existing reservation. To place an order at Amorette's, call (407) 934-3500 or visit the store at least 72 hours in advance.

Don't forget to stop by The Chapeau on Main Street, U.S.A. for a pint-sized set of embroidered Mickey Ears for the birthday girl! You'll also want to remember to bring a blanket for her to sit on to catch stray crumbs, and lots of baby wipes to clean her little hands and face! A great location for your celebration would be the fenced in garden area in front of The Crystal Palace Restaurant, if it is open and available. You might want to consider booking a Capture Your Moment photo session with a Disney PhotoPass photographer to document the occasion!

I hope these suggestions help you to create the most magical celebration ever for your granddaughter. Happy Birthday, Princess!
