Very much out of shape, but nothing motivates like Disney! I would like to sign up for the Princess Half Marathon in 2013. Have any of you run the half with no other marathons under your belts? Am i being totally unrealistic in thinking this is possible?

    Hi Heather:

I highly encourage anyone thinking of participating in a Disney running event to give it a try. They are well-organized runs, full of fun and energy, and they take place in the most magical place on earth.

I'm not a natural born runner, but I became really interested in running a few years ago after hearing discussions on podcasts about Disney marathon weekend. In early 2008, I began to slowly train for the 2009 half-marathon. As much as I trained, even on the day of the half-marathon, I wasn't certain I would be able to complete the race. However, to my surprise it was an easy run (relatively speaking), and I was buoyed by the spectators, marching bands, cheerleaders, and Disney characters cheering the runners on as we ran by them on the course. I loved the event so much I returned to run it again in 2010.

I never would have run more than a mile at once if it was not for the Walt Disney World Half Marathon.  Like you, I gave myself many many months of training before the race.

For race day, I recommend wearing layers of clothing that you can discard during the race if necessary. I also recommend taking it easy the day before the race, and not attack the Parks too hard. Enjoy light meals before the race and get to sleep early the night before.

Good luck.  The whole Moms Panel are cheering for you.
