Can I set up the My Disney Experience app on my 12 year-old’s phone and create a profile and link it to our reservation? She will be 13 at the time of our trip. Or do I have to wait until she turns 13?

    Hi Lauren,

It's great to see you planning Disney at planDisney again! I love visiting Walt Disney World Resort with my "big kids." There's no stroller to push through the parks, my 8 and 11-year-olds are tall and brave enough to experience all the thrills, and I have lots of help when it comes to using the My Disney Experience mobile app to make Genie+ Lightning Lane reservations, Mobile Food and Beverage Orders, etc. My kids won't have their own mobile devices for a while, but they are officially in the Disney planning apprenticeship program.

You seem to be in the know about My Disney Experience accounts, Lauren. Guests must be 13 years old to create their own My Disney Experience account. Guests under 13 must have a My Disney Experience account profile managed by another person's account. Chances are, your daughter's vacation entitlements (tickets, theme park reservations, Disney Resort hotel reservation, etc) are already linked to a My Disney Experience account profile managed by your account. You can confirm this by locating your daughter's name on your Family & Friends list.

You can download the My Disney Experience mobile app to your daughter's phone at any time, Lauren. Until she turns 13 and can officially create her own My Disney Experience account, however, she'll need to log in using your account information. Some families prefer this arrangement for their teenagers. While logged into a parent's account, teens can still help check wait times, book Genie+ Lightning Lane reservations, view Disney PhotoPass images, etc.

If the preference is for your daughter to create her own My Disney Experience account once she turns 13, follow these steps to merge that account with her existing account profile:

    1. Have your 13-year-old daughter create a My Disney Experience account.
    2. Once she creates a My Disney Experience account, click "Update" next to her name on your Family & Friends list.
    3. Click "Share Planning with [daughter's name]" in the top right of the Update Information box.
    4. Enter the email address associated with your daughter's account and click "Continue."
    5. Have your daughter accept the email invitation to connect.
Once your daughter accepts the invitation, all of her vacation entitlements will automagically transfer to her account. You will remain connected as Family & Friends, which means you can still view and make plans for each other. Note that Guests under the age of 18 cannot enter a payment method, which means they cannot do things like purchase Disney Genie+ service or place a Mobile Food and Beverage Order.

If your daughter is anything like mine, she's going to fall in love with the Disney PhotoPass Lenses available in the My Disney Experience mobile app with the purchase of Disney Genie+ service (three small lines at the bottom right of the app's homepage --> Disney PhotoPass Lenses). Selfies have never been this magical!

If I misunderstood your situation, Lauren, please reply to me directly with as many details as possible. Congrats on almost reaching an important parenting milestone and best wishes for those magical teenage years!
